MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – In honor of this year’s Centennial Anniversary of Powered Flight, the Evergreen Aviation Museum has established the first-annual commemorative Century of Flight Aviation Edition MONOPOLY tournament. The game, produced by Parker Brothers, is rich in history and showcases some of the most significant aircraft ever built, including Howard Hughes’ Flying Boat, the Spruce Goose and the supersonic SR-71 Blackbird that are housed in the Evergreen Aviation Museum. In this commemorative edition, game pieces resemble planes, helicopters and balloons, and participants are purchasing aircraft, hangars and airports, rather than original properties and hotels.
The public is invited to participate in the tournament. It begins at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Ore. Tickets are $15 per adult and $10 per student. Entry fee includes admission to the museum, a guarantee of one, 90-minute game, a snack bag and refreshments. Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and include a behind-the-scenes tour of the famous Spruce Goose as well as a photograph in the cockpit, a collector-edition Century of Flight monopoly game, and a museum store gift certificate. Tickets must be pre-purchased by calling 503-434-4023.
“This is the perfect opportunity for a family game day at the museum in celebration of the Centennial of Flight. Participants of all ages will enjoy this traditional game surrounded by the beauty of flight,” said Kristin Russell, Director of Special Events at the Evergreen Aviation Museum. “We would like this to be the first of many similar events.”
On September 9, 2003, the Museum began a special 100-day countdown to honor the historic day the Wright Brothers took their invention into flight. The Museum continues to celebrate different facets of aviation through a series of activities that are fun for all ages. Special activities will continue to include admission to the cargo deck of the famous “Spruce Goose,” which is open to the public seven days a week from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Museum admission prices have recently changed to $11 for adults, $10 for seniors and veterans, and $7 for students. The new prices include admission onto the Spruce Goose viewing platform as well as tours of more than 45 historic aircraft and exhibits in the Museum gallery.
The Evergreen Aviation Museum has been open since June 6, 2001 and has welcomed more than 450,000 visitors from all over the world. The new address for the Evergreen Aviation Museum is 500 NE Captain Michael King Smith Way. The Museum’s winter hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily except when it is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. An extensive museum store and friendly café add to the Museum experience. The Evergreen Aviation Museum is located across the highway from the McMinnville Airport and about three miles southeast of McMinnville, Ore., on Highway 18. Regular visitor admission is required.
